Sphecodes marginatus (Gold on White)

Sphecodes marginatus (Gold on White)
This print was created as part of the collaborative, multidisciplinary project ‘Fifty Bees: The Interconnnectedness of All Things’ that seeks to raise awareness of the diversity and plight of British Bees. My artwork responds to the bee ‘Sphecodes marginatus’ or the margined blood bee. The snake relates to fennel, which in folklore was called ‘snake herb’ as snakes were believed to rub against it to sharpen their eyesight. Knapweed is also included, it’s genus name comes from the centaur Chiron who legend has it used the plants’ flowers as a poultice to heal the wound made by an arrow dipped in Hydra’s blood. In reference to this wonderful legend I also included the star V766 Centauri, one of the largest stars yet discovered, as well as many other plant species that Sphecodes marginatus frequents, each with its own fascinating histories, uses and legends.
